The History

Petrolia is nested in the heart of Southwestern Ontario's Lambton County and framed by Lake Huron and the St. Clair River. Known as The Greatest Town on Earth, Petrolia's unique and rich history as the cradle of the global oil industry is reflected in its countless lush green parks, grand church spires, colorful gardens and beautiful neighbourhoods.

The town's commitment to the preservation of its history supports a quality of life that energizes its residents and inspires its visitors. From its full-service hospital to its outstanding community and wellness centre; from its unique and vibrant businesses to its elegantly restored Victoria Playhouse; from its excellent schools to its many service clubs and volunteer organizations, Petrolia honours its success and takes pride in its fiercely independent community spirit.

The Amenities

The Wellness Centre has a wide variety of state of the art equipment that is accessible to people from all walks of life, in any shape or condition. The Wellness Staff can design a program that will help you achieve your goals and improve every aspect of your life. Whether it's a program change, a group fitness class concern, personal training options or wellness assessments they are here to help.

The Victoria Playhouse is a gem of a theatre located in the Victoria Hall in Petrolia. The Playhouse, just like the legendary Phoenix, has literally risen from its own ashes after the devastating fire of January 1989. Situated in Ontario's first oil town and after having provided a venue for theatre productions for over 100 years, Victoria Playhouse is now a modern, fully equipped, state of the art, 425 seats, air conditioned facility.

Shopping

We have clothing stores for men and women; fine dining - there are tea rooms and coffee shops; unique gift stores that offer the exotic and unusual; a grocery store that will appeal to gourmets and foodies; there are hardware stores for the D.I.Y.ers and full service gas stations. Most of our shops are set amid the Victorian structures on our main street, of course. The Nicol Library, which is very popular and well used, was once a Victorian train station. In May 2010, we will have a brand new Farmers' Market for fresh fruit and vegetables, meat and poultry, and homemade delights such as preservatives and pies. And when everyone is well-dressed, well-read, and healthy they can head over to The Centre for a workout!
